Slow home Wi-Fi is rarely an internet speed problem — it’s usually a placement, interference, or configuration problem. Before you call your provider or buy new hardware, work through these steps in order; most people find the fix well before the last one.
1. Check where your router actually is
Router placement matters more than almost anything else. A router tucked in a closet, behind a TV, or in a basement corner is fighting through walls and furniture before the signal even reaches your device. Move it to a central, elevated, open location if at all possible — the difference is often dramatic.
2. Restart it — properly
Unplug the router (and modem, if separate) for a full 30 seconds, then power it back on. This clears temporary memory issues that build up over weeks of continuous operation. It sounds too simple to matter, but it resolves a surprising share of everyday slowdowns.
3. Check for interference
Older routers using the 2.4GHz band are more prone to interference from microwaves, baby monitors, and neighboring networks. If your router supports 5GHz, connect devices that are physically close to it (like a laptop in the same room) to that band for a meaningful speed boost, reserving 2.4GHz for devices farther away where its better wall penetration helps.
4. See how many devices are actually connected
Smart home devices, streaming boxes, and old phones you forgot about all quietly consume bandwidth and router resources even when idle. Check your router’s connected devices list (usually accessible through its app or web interface) and remove anything you don’t recognize or no longer use.
5. Update the router’s firmware
Manufacturers release firmware updates that fix bugs and security issues, and outdated firmware can cause instability or slow performance. Check your router’s app or settings page for an update option — this is often overlooked because, unlike phones, routers don’t nag you about it.
If you’ve done all of this and it’s still slow
- Consider a mesh system if you have a large home or persistent dead zones — a single router, however good, has physical range limits.
- Check your actual plan speed against what you’re paying for; run a wired speed test directly to the modem to rule out an ISP-side issue.
- Replace genuinely old hardware — a router more than five to seven years old may simply lack the capacity for modern household device counts.
Most home Wi-Fi problems get solved somewhere in steps one through four. Hardware replacement should be the last resort, not the first instinct.
